William Morris, writer
of that anthem of peaceful anarchism "News from Nowhere", strove in his
arts to achieve what we would today call Quality or Excellence. So excellent
were his watercolor patterns that they set the standard for over one hundred
years. Up until computerization of the trades the patterns of William Morris
were the most often reproduced and copied. Even today, many wall coverings
bear the echoes of Morris' work. William Morris believed that all humankind
could achieve quality in their lives but for the mediocrity engendered
by the abstraction called Government and the profit-oriented system that
it maintains.
